Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)

The Basics of Ear Reshaping

Ear reshaping, also known as otoplasty or ear pinning, is a procedure designed to correct prominent or misshapen ears so they are in proportion to the rest of your head and face. The procedure is covered under OHIP until your 18th birthday. During the procedure, an incision is made behind your ears in a natural skin fold and the underlying cartilage is reshaped and / or pulled back toward your head. Your new ears are held in place with permanent sutures.

For more information please view our patient education video that shows the procedure (non graphically) and answers common questions, please click here.

Toronto Otoplasty Fast Facts:

  • No overnight stay is required, but you will need to make follow-up appointments with Dr. Sliwin to monitor recovery.
  • A head band must be worn at night following the procedure to keep your ears held in place.
  • You must sleep on your back with your head elevated during the recovery period.
  • Minor scarring is visible after the procedure, but it is behind your ears.
  • You will require less than a week off following the procedure, but your head band must be worn at night for 4 weeks.

Who is a Candidate for Ear Reshaping?

Ear reshaping surgery is for anyone who has prominent ears or misshapen ears and wants them to be in proportion with their other facial features. Otoplasty is an effective procedure if any of the following applies to you:

  • Ears that stick out from your head and are out of proportion with the rest of your features.
  • Ears that are misshapen and distract from the rest of your face.
  • Emotional trauma from being teased due to large ears.

Otoplasty Benefits

With one relatively simple procedure, the effects of having prominent ears are eliminated in one day. Some of the benefits you will notice after having ear reshaping surgery include:

  • Improved self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • Improved social life.
  • Ability to cut your hair short and expose your ears if you choose.
  • Enhanced facial symmetry and proportion.
