Tummy Tuck & Abdominoplasty Surgery

What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, also referred to as ‘tummy tuck,’ is a procedure performed by Toronto based plastic surgeon Dr. Sammy Sliwin to remove the excess fat and skin of your abdominal region that you are unable to get rid of through diet and exercise.

For more information please view our patient education video that shows the procedure (non graphically) and answers common questions, please click here.

When is abdominoplasty used?

Pregnancy and weight gain resulting in accumulated fat around the abdomen may stretch the skin beyond the point where it can retract to normal after giving birth or weight loss, respectively. In such cases, abdominoplasty surgery can be used to tighten the muscles in your abdominal wall, while removing any excess skin in order to reveal a tighter, more contoured abdomen.

Even healthy individuals in the proper weight range can have fat deposits in the abdomen, bulges around the waist, stretched-out skin, and scaring. Fortunately, Dr. Sammy Sliwin can help them by removing the extra fat and skin in those regions, so that the muscles underneath can tighten, giving the patient a slimmer stomach.

Am I a suitable candidate for abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty is not just for those who have problems with weight control. The procedure can benefit a variety of people, including:

  • Women with prior pregnancy
  • Individuals with poor genetics
  • Individuals with weight fluctuations
  • Individuals with prior surgical scars

Dr. Sliwin can help give you a firmer, smoother, abdominal profile through an abdominoplasty surgery.

What can a tummy tuck do for me?

For a typical abdominoplasty patient, the procedure can:

  • Correct lower abdominal bulging
  • Tighten stretched abdominal skin
  • Correct weakened abdominal muscles
  • Complement liposuction

Is abdominoplasty the same procedure as liposuction?

Abdominoplasty and Liposuction are two very different and distinct procedures. Liposuction is used to remove stubborn fat deposits from isolated, concentrated pockets on the tummy, legs, and hips. Not all patients are suitable candidates for liposuction, because the procedure requires minimal excess skin.

Abdominoplasty involves the removal of both skin and fat from the general abdominal region, whereas liposuction is simply fat removal. That said, there are some instances when the two techniques are used together.

How is abdominoplasty performed?

There are different techniques for a tummy tuck, depending on the amount of tissue removed, and the shape and positioning of the incision, but the procedure is mostly the same.

During a full tummy tuck, Dr. Sliwin will put you under general anaesthesia before making an incision across your lower abdomen, slightly above the pubic bone and pubic hair, from hip to hip. The procedure leaves a scar, so the surgeon will place the incision in a place where it can be easily hidden by a bikini bottom.

After the incision is made, the skin and fat is separated from the abdominal muscles, all the way to the bottom of the rib cage. Another incision is made around your belly button to loosen the skin so it detaches from the belly button. Usually, the excess fat and skin below your belly button is removed.

Afterwards, Dr. Sliwin tightens the fascia and rectus abdominus muscles by folding the former along the abdomen’s centreline, causing the muscles and abdominal wall to tighten. The skin above your belly button is then pulled downwards and sutured into position, as the surgeon closes the incision and makes a new hole in the skin to suture around your belly button.

When the procedure is over, the surgeon will place one or two drains under your skin, below the incision, for a few days, so the fluids can drain.
