Liposuction Surgery

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction refers to a surgical procedure where stubborn fat deposits are essentially “vacuumed” out of your body. As most people know, sometimes isolated areas of fat just won’t respond to diet and exercise. It’s frustrating , annoying and it can usually be solved with liposuction. The suctioning technique used with the liposuction tool, known as a “cannula tube” removes fat cells in certain areas, while at the same time shaping or contouring. It isn’t considered a weight-loss method, but more of a shaping procedure.

Are you satisfied with your body? After countless attempts of diet and exercise are you still having trouble eliminating troubling fat deposits to get the contours you’ve always wanted? If this is the case, perhaps a surgical option is the right option for you. Dr. Sammy Sliwin can help as one of Toronto’s top cosmetic plastic surgeons with nearly thirty years of experience in the operating room.

The Procedure

We should remind the reader that there is no such thing as a minor surgery and any time an incision is made in the body we run the risk of further complication. However, liposuction is a well-established procedure with a high success and satisfaction rate among Dr. Sliwin’s patients.

The procedure itself is relatively simple and involves removing unwanted fat and reshaping the areas contours. Liposuction can be done on nearly any part of the body from the buttocks, hips, thighs, abdomen, neck, around the cheeks or jawline, and even more.

In the area with the unwanted contours, a small incision is made in an inconspicuous location or where a natural fold in the skin occurs. Then, a small smooth tube known as a “cannula” is inserted.  Tumescent fluid is then injected. This will provide the local anaesthesia to numb the area as well as expanding the fat tissue to make suction easier. Liposuction can be performed either under general or local anesthesia depending on the number of areas being operated on and the amount of contours that need to be reshaped.

After the incision is made and the cannula tube is inserted, the fat is removed with back and forth motions. The incision will likely be sutured and absorbent bandages will be placed over it. Some bruising and swelling will occur but that will usually clear up within a few weeks.

When preparing for liposuction surgery you should get ready to take a week off work and forgo light exercise for two weeks and more vigorous physical activity for 4-6 weeks. A compression garment must also be worn over the altered area for six weeks following liposuction. Scarring should be very minor and while you will see improvements in your contours immediately, it may take up to six months for full results.

Are You A Candidate?

Liposuction should not be used as a major weight loss plan but instead best results are achieved for removing stubborn, isolated areas of fat that have proven difficult to eliminate. If any of these apply to you, then you may be a candidate for liposuction:

  • Diet and exercise have proven unable to get you the contours you desire
  • You have isolated areas of fat that you are unable to eliminate
  • Your body is disproportionate or asymmetrical
  • Suffer from low self-esteem or negative body image due to unwanted contours
