Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Male Breast Reduction Basics

Even though most people associate breast reduction with females, male breast reduction is also a common surgical procedure. Just like its female counterpart, male breast reduction removes tissue and fat in order to reduce the size of overdeveloped male breasts, known as gynecomastia.

For more information please view our patient education video that shows the procedure (non graphically) and answers common questions, please click here.

Toronto Male Breast Reduction Fast Facts:

  • No overnight stay is required, but follow-up appointments with Dr. Sliwin are scheduled.
  • Some scarring remains, often less than1 cm., but they are often concealed within natural contours of the chest.
  • Plan for 2 weeks of recovery time and reduced activity following surgery.
  • A support garment is required during recovery to limit movement and help with healing.
  • You must refrain from exercise for at least 6 weeks.

Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia is a condition that is very common during puberty (almost 40%) triggered by an imbalance in the hormone testosterone compared to the hormone estrogen, resulting in overdeveloped breasts in males. In most patients this resolves by age 18. If you are a male with enlarged breast tissue and it is causing you physical discomfort or embarrassment, breast reduction may be the solution. Some of the common causes include:

  • Natural hormonal changes at different points in life.
  • Certain medications, including various street drugs.
  • Health conditions like hyperthyroidism, tumours, liver failure, kidney failure and malnutrition.

A Simple Procedure with Big Results

Male breast reduction may not be an overly complex surgical procedure, but the results can be profound and far-reaching. Some of the benefits reported by men who undergo the procedure include:

  • More masculine-looking pectoral area
  • Tightened skin in the chest area
  • Improved self-image
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Willingness to participate in sports
  • Willingness to go swimming or remove your shirt in public
