How do Nose Jobs not Leave Scars?

Nose jobs, also known as rhinoplasty, are one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, and there are several reasons for its popularity.

Non-Scarring Nose Jobs

Nose reshaping can address several issues with the nose, both in appearance and in function. If it is disproportionally large or small in comparison to the rest of your face, or if it is crooked or misshapen, nose reshaping can help a lot. This procedure can also correct deviated septums, which can cause breathing or snoring problems.

But perhaps the most important factor in rhinoplasty’s popularity is that your nose is literally the centre of your face! If you are not happy with the appearance of your nose, unlike other body parts, it’s not something that you can easily conceal with clothing or even makeup.

However, just as your nose’s central location makes it a prime candidate for plastic surgery, it also means any residual scars could be that much more noticeable.

So how do rhinoplasty procedures deal with this conundrum?

Fortunately, plastic surgeons have mastered techniques for minimizing the appearance of scars in any scenario. For example, they use extreme care in handling any tissue to avoid trauma that could exacerbate scars. And in situations where sutures are required, they may use either very fine surface sutures or dissolving sutures underneath the surface.

In the specific case of nose reshaping, there are two general categories of incisions that could be used, depending on the requirements of the procedure.

  • “Closed” rhinoplasty, also known as endonasal rhinoplasty, leaves no external scars whatsoever. This is because all of the necessary incisions are made inside the nostrils instead of on the outside surface of the nose.
  • In cases where closed rhinoplasty will not work, your surgeon may perform an “open” or “external” rhinoplasty. However, even in this case scars are virtually undetectable to the human eye afterwards. The external incision is made across the skin that divides your nostrils. This is called the “columella.” Since this incision is very small, and because of it’s hidden location and your surgeon’s delicate technique, any postoperative scar will be essentially invisible.

The majority of aesthetic nose reshaping procedures use endonasal incisions, ensuring no outward scars. Yet even in cases requiring external incisions, the care and planning performed by your surgeon will ensure that any external scars practically disappear.

If you are considering nose reshaping surgery, you can be confident that your surgeon will use the latest modern techniques to prevent any unsightly scars.
